News For Foodies – SA’s Top 10 Restaurants For 2019

If there’s one thing that gets foodie tongues a-wagging every year, it’s the annual Mercedes Benz Eat-Out Awards. This prestigious awards ceremony recognises the country’s best restaurants (as determined by Eat Out reviews) based on international criteria.

Scoring is carried out incognito by a team of acclaimed food experts, based on criteria like food, service and ambience.This year, the gala event took place at Cape Town’s Grand West Arena on 17 November and true to form Cape Town and Western Cape Restaurants dominated the top ten. Only one out-of-province eatery managed to sneak in a showing, namely Restaurant Mosaic at The Orient, in the number 9 spot.

South Africa’s shining culinary talents were honoured at the 2019 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards on 17 November 2019 at the Grand Arena at Grand West in Cape Town.

These were Cape Town’s top achievers in the fine dining department:
10. Camphors at Vergelegen – Somerset West 
9. Chefs Warehouse at Beau Constantia  – Constantia, Cape Town
8. Salsify – Camps Bay, Cape Town
7. Eike – Stellenbosch
6. La Petite Colombe – Franschhoek
5. FYN Restaurant – City Bowl, Cape Town
4. Wolfgat – Paternoster
3. The Restaurant at Waterkloof – Somerset West
2. The Test Kitchen – Woodstock
1. La Colombe – Constantia

Everyday Eateries of Excellence

The Eat Out Awards don’t restrict 

their focus to these big hitters though. The following restaurants took the honours in the ‘everyday category’: 

Apart from these main awards, Western Cape restaurants in and near Cape Town also cleaned up in the following special awards categories: 

  • Chef of the Year: Bertus Basson, Eike and Overture
  • New Restaurant of the Year: Jewell’s Restaurant, Paarl
  • Sustainability Award: Camphors at Vergelegen, Somerset West
  • Innovation Award: The Test Kitchen, Woodstock, Cape Town
  • Service Excellence: The Test Kitchen
  • Wine Service Award: Joseph Dhafana, La Colombe
  • Outstanding Contribution to Service: Jennifer Hugé, FYN Restaurant
  • Eat Out Style Award: FYN Restaurant
