Craft Beer – Brew Your Own in Cape Town

Published on October 28, 2019 by Jenni

A trip to the charming town of Darling near the West Coast National Park is a must-do while staying in self-catering accommodation in Cape Town. This iconic town is home to the unique Evita se Perron Theatre, quaint shops and eateries, gorgeous spring blooms and plenty of locally-brewed beer.
Yet, if you can’t squeeze this outing into your schedule, you can always console yourself with a trip to Darling Brew Woodstock instead. This haven of slow-brewed beer – to be enjoyed at snail’s pace, developed due to popular demand, and now it’s getting even better.
Do It Yourself

Now, not only can you sip and sample a wide range of Darling Brews at this lively venue, you can also learn to make your own. This exciting concept was conceived by master brewers Jan Kaserer and Hennie Blom and gives you a heads up on the careful process of craft beer brewing, just like they do it.

Of course, they aren’t giving away too many of their secrets, but you’ll get a good grip on the basics during this day of dabbling in the art of beer-making.
Your lessons include a chance to taste and compare 8 of their best creations and a range of sampling platters from the restaurant too. These tasters include the Bone Crusher, Gypsy Mask, Blood Serpent, Black Mist, Rogue Pony, Slow Beer and Pearl Rose beers as well as a nibble on German charcuterie platters and a unique take on the aptly named, ‘Beeramisu’ to finish off. There are vegetarian options available too.

After that you’ll learn how to brew beer, Darling-style with the emphasis on enjoyment and a side of environmental responsibility, sustainability and no waste.

You’ll be rewarded for your efforts with a 1 litre growler of your favourite Darling Brew and a 5 litre keg of your creation (once it’s had time to mature).

A Day In

If beer brewing isn’t your style, there are plenty of other reasons to pop into this charming micro-brewery. It’s a family-friendly place with play areas and a special kiddie’s menu for the youngsters.

Adults can indulge in fine German fare, all of Darling brew’s best beers, excellent whisky and freshly-made cocktails. There are also a range of brewery tours to pique your interest and the venue is available to celebrate special occasions, slow-style.

Go ahead, make a day of it while spending time in the Mother City, but first, get in touch to book your self-catering accommodation in Cape Town.
